If you ask me, Rome will always have a special place in my heart. It’s my favorite city in all of Italy — and that’s saying a lot because Italy has some incredible destinations! I lived in Rome for a while a few years ago, and it quickly became my second home. The cobblestone streets, the ancient ruins, and the vibrancy of the city — there’s something about Rome that’s hard to beat. However, I recently had the chance to rediscover Milan, and I must say, I was totally smitten again.
Last Christmas, I decided to spend my birthday in Milan with my little boy. It wasn’t the perfect trip for some not-at-all-important reasons, but looking back, it turned out to be a fantastic experience. There’s something magical about spending the holiday season in a city like Milan — it’s the perfect blend of history, fashion, culture, and excitement. And it was the perfect place to make new memories with my son.
Milan isn’t just about being the fashion capital of the world; there’s so much more to the city than meets the eye. Though we did experience some freezing temperatures (which wasn’t my favorite part), we made the most of it and discovered so many cool spots, especially for families. The city is filled with beautiful places to visit, each offering something unique to enjoy. The beauty of Milan isn’t just in its luxurious shopping boutiques; it’s also in its hidden gems that offer a little something for everyone, including kids.
We booked our accommodation last minute and managed to get an apartment near the Duomo di Milano (Milan’s stunning cathedral), which was the perfect location. Not only were we close to Milan’s most iconic landmark, but we were also within walking distance to many other highlights, restaurants, and attractions. Milan is a walking city, and the beauty is in exploring its streets and vibrant neighborhoods. Despite the cold, we made sure to bundle up and take in the sights.
Milan was at its best during the holiday season — the lights, the markets, and the festive atmosphere made the trip feel even more special. Though we didn’t spend all our time shopping (despite being in Milan!), we did attend the Prada Christmas events. The glamorous holiday celebrations showcased Milan’s high-end fashion culture, and even though it wasn’t the main focus of our trip, it was an experience to remember.
But beyond the luxury brands and designer boutiques, Milan has so much to offer, especially for young families. If you’re planning a trip to Milan with kids, here are some must-visit spots that we absolutely loved:
-
Duomo di Milano – One of the most iconic cathedrals in the world, and a must-see when you visit Milan. The intricate details of the cathedral are mesmerizing, but don’t forget to take the elevator (or brave the stairs) to the rooftop for stunning panoramic views of the city. It’s a sight to behold.
-
Prada Christmas Events – Milan is home to some of the world’s most luxurious fashion houses, and the Christmas events at Prada were a unique experience to get a taste of Milan’s glamorous side. Even if you're not into high fashion, the decorations, lights, and festive displays were truly something special.
-
Museo dei Bambini (Children’s Museum) – For those traveling with young kids, the Children’s Museum is a fantastic spot. It’s interactive, educational, and full of engaging exhibits that kids will love. It’s a perfect place to let your little ones explore while learning along the way.
-
Lego Store – Who doesn’t love Lego? The Lego Store in Milan is a paradise for little builders. It’s not just a place to buy Lego sets — it’s an experience. With interactive displays, Lego models, and plenty of opportunities to get hands-on, it’s a perfect stop for any child.
-
Naviglio Grande – The Navigli district is home to Milan’s picturesque canals, and Naviglio Grande is the most famous of them all. The canals are lined with charming cafes, shops, and restaurants, and you can often spot ducks swimming in the water, which my little one loved. It’s a great spot for a family walk, and the vibe is always lively, especially during the holiday season.
-
Top Pasta Spots – When in Italy, you have to enjoy some pasta! Milan has some of the best pasta dishes in the country, and I highly recommend trying them. From traditional Italian pasta to innovative takes on classic dishes, there’s no shortage of delicious options to satisfy your cravings.
-
The Last Supper (Cenacolo Vinciano) – Milan is home to Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, one of the world’s most famous works of art. While this is a must-see, it may not be the best idea to visit with young kids. It requires quiet and stillness, which is hard to maintain with little ones. But if you're an art lover, it's an experience not to be missed.
-
Natural Science Museum (Museo di Storia Naturale) – A fantastic place for kids and adults alike, the Natural Science Museum is one of Milan's hidden treasures. It’s full of fascinating exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to space exploration, and it's a great place to spend a few hours learning about the natural world.
-
Da Vinci Museum – If you're a fan of Leonardo da Vinci, then a trip to the Da Vinci Museum is a must. It’s dedicated to the genius of da Vinci, showcasing his inventions, sketches, and masterpieces. My son and I had a blast learning about da Vinci's brilliance and exploring the interactive displays.
-
Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle) – Another must-see in Milan, Sforza Castle is a beautiful and historic landmark. The castle houses several museums, including an art museum and a museum dedicated to ancient musical instruments. It’s a great place to explore with kids, and the surrounding park is perfect for a relaxing stroll.
Milan truly offers something for everyone, whether you’re into history, art, shopping, or just soaking in the beauty of the city. Next time, I’ll definitely plan my trip for spring to experience the city in a warmer, more pleasant climate. But regardless of when you visit, Milan will surely capture your heart with its charm, elegance, and family-friendly activities.
There will definitely be a next time for me in Milan, and I can't wait to explore more of this beautiful city.
