Mother’s Day: It’s personal

Mother’s Day: It’s personal

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and if you’re like me, you may have reached a point where you’ve run out of ideas for the perfect gift. After a few years in the adult life, you’ll probably realize that your mother is now an independent woman who takes care of herself (and probably everyone around her too). She buys her own clothes, perfumes, books—whatever she loves most. And let’s be honest, that’s great!

But the tricky part? She probably doesn’t need another sweater, a pillowcase, or another bouquet of flowers to add to the garden. After all, we all know that with age, the things we truly need tend to become more... specific. If you’ve found yourself feeling a bit lost when it comes to finding something unique for your mom, don’t worry—I've got you covered!

Here’s how I’ve managed to surprise my mom with something special and unexpected for Mother's Day (and birthdays, Name’s Day, and just because). As adults, if we’re fortunate enough to have our basic needs covered, we don't really need more things. In fact, every time I open my closet, I often feel like I already have more than enough. Of course, we all tend to desire things, but this constant yearning for more can be a road to nowhere. But that’s a conversation for another post, maybe!

A gift Card is always a useful gift!

What I really think is that people, especially mothers, need to enjoy life in the moment. Sure, some folks tell themselves, “I go to the gym twice a week,” but is that really because they enjoy it? Or is it just an escape from the responsibilities and stress of everyday life? Ideally, going to the gym should be something you look forward to—something you celebrate as part of a fulfilling lifestyle. And that’s where the real joy comes in.

But wait! We're talking about Mother's Day, not fitness routines, right? Well, I bring it up because it’s a good metaphor for how we approach gift-giving. It’s not about the "obligatory" gift, but the thoughtful ones that celebrate memories and experiences. So, if you’re looking for that perfect gift for your mom this year, let’s talk about ways to bring those special moments to life.

The Power of Memories: Why They Matter More Than Stuff

One of the most cherished things for people of a certain age is the opportunity to preserve memories. A picture of a grandchild? It’s guaranteed to make any grandmother smile. But why stop there? Memories—especially travel memories—hold an incredible amount of emotional value. They transport people to a different place, a different time, and make them feel alive again. That’s the magic of travel—it’s not just about the destination, but the journey, the emotions, and the experiences that stay with you forever.

This is where I come in—maps! I create maps as a way to record my own travels and memories. The journals are for me, and for my son someday, but the illustrated maps are for you all to cherish and share. A map in your living room makes for more than just decoration. It becomes a conversation starter, something to look at and rediscover every day. Whether it’s a honeymoon trip to Paris, a summer spent in San Francisco, or a family vacation to Great Britain, these places are a part of your family’s story. You can proudly display them in your home, sparking curiosity and bringing your memories to life.

Give the Gift of Travel Memories

When it comes to Mother's Day, finding a special place to highlight is key. If your mom has a favorite destination—be it a city, country, or even a particular continent—there’s a beautiful way to gift her that memory. Perhaps you visited Edinburgh together, or maybe she took a solo trip to New York when she was younger. Doing a little research and finding an illustrated city map, country map, or even a continental map (if you were raised by a true globetrotter!) can be an unforgettable gift.

A map on the wall doesn’t just serve as décor—it evokes nostalgia and transports your mom back to those happy times. It's a piece of your family's history, filled with joy, adventure, and love. And the best part? It doesn’t require packing, extra trips to the mall, or figuring out what sweater she doesn’t have yet. It’s personal, thoughtful, and meaningful—everything that makes a gift truly special.

Other Thoughtful Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

While a map is a great idea, there are plenty of other experiences and plans that can make your mom feel loved and appreciated. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind:

  • A Quiet Lunch at a Fancy Restaurant: Treat her to a lovely, peaceful lunch at her favorite restaurant. Whether it’s a place with a view or a hidden gem in town, this time spent together will be a memory in itself.
  • Theater or Concert Tickets: Give her the gift of culture with tickets to a show, a concert, or a special event. The memories of the night will last much longer than the physical gift.
  • A Day at the Spa: If your mom loves a little pampering, why not surprise her with a relaxing spa day? It’s the perfect way to help her unwind and take some time for herself.
  • A Memory-Making Experience: Sometimes, it’s the shared experiences that matter most. A cooking class, a wine-tasting tour, or a weekend getaway can be the best gift you give her.

Ultimately, it’s not about the stuff we gift our mothers—it’s about making them feel seen, loved, and appreciated. Whether it’s a map of a place that holds a special meaning, or a relaxing experience that creates lasting memories, the most important thing is to make her feel like the amazing, capable person she is. And if we’re lucky, we’ll get to continue making those memories together for years to come.

So go ahead—find that perfect gift and make this Mother's Day one to remember. Trust me, your mom will thank you.

Happy Mother’s Day! :)
